Live Thread: First 2016 Presidential Debate

September 26th, 2016

By Hunter Wallace

Just as I predicted several months ago, the presidential election has come down to an extremely tight race with Donald Trump having about a 40 percent chance to win the presidency. He’s actually polling somewhat better than that (between the 46% to 48% range) in the latest 538 average out this afternoon.

The presidential election has also come down to a pitched battle over cucked, college educated, middle class White suburbanites: the Research Triangle in North Carolina, the Atlanta suburbs in Georgia, NOVA in Virginia, the I-4 corridor in Florida, Metro Phoenix in Arizona, the Reno area in Nevada, suburban Milwaukee in Wisconsin, suburban Detroit in Michigan, suburban Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati in Ohio, the Philadelphia suburbs in Pennsylvania and exurban Boston in Maine and New Hampshire.

Trump is doing slightly better than I expected because so many things have broken his way: steering clear of gaffes and scandals since Khizr Khan episode, Hillary’s health scare, Hillary’s email revelations, the Clinton Foundation scandal, “Basket of Deplorables,” the ineffectiveness of Hillary’s television ads, Cruz endorsed, the black riots in Charlotte and Milwaukee, and the terrorist attacks in Minnesota and New York/New Jersey. Hillary has also proven incapable of making herself more likable since her convention.

In light of the above, we will see an affable Trump tonight who wants to come across as presidential. He will be respectful and courteous to Hillary. The gameplan will be to smile, demonstrate his policy chops to show he is qualified, and avoid taking the bait under any circumstances. Hillary will be trying to demonstrate that Trump is a racist and that he doesn’t have the temperament to be president. We will also see another performance of non-racist Trump and Trump as the populist tribune of the common man.

Anything could happen. Lester Holt could try to sabotage Trump with fact checking. I expect Hillary will get credit for not keeling over and dying on stage and that the #LyingPress will declare her the victor no matter what happens on stage. Hillary will have to demonstrate that she is a likable human being – TOUGH. She will have to get the Berners on board without saying anything that will trigger the White college educated suburbanites who normally vote Republican and scare them into voting for Trump. She will have to upstage Trump in front of a television audience with her canned lines and zingers which will be hard to do given his reality television experience.

Hillary Clinton is a wonk with a firm grasp of public policy, but someone who has no genuine political talent whatsoever. Trump is still struggling to grasp policy details (will he get a question like “Who is the president of Tajikistan?”), but he is a seasoned reality television star who understands how the media works. He also has good instincts. We will know much more about how these two match up in a few hours.

Note: Expect the polls to get bouncy as we move through the debates.

Glenn Beck Now Says Ted Cruz Isn’t George Washington

September 26th, 2016

By Hunter Wallace

It happened this morning on the Glenn Beck program:

“Glenn Beck nervously paced back and forth through his TV studio designed to look like the Oval Office.

“He’s gonna call?” the conservative stalwart sheepishly asked. Beck was a lovesick puppy questioning whether his wayward one-and-only, Ted Cruz, will call him as scheduled on Monday morning.

“He’s gonna call,” co-host and longtime confidant Stu Burguiere reassured him. …

Following the interview, Beck joined Burgiere and Pat Gray on the “Oval Office” couch, and poured out his heart.
“For the very first time I heard Ted Cruz calculate. And when that happened, the whole thing fell apart for me,” he lamented. “It’s my fault for believing men can actually be George Washington. It’s my fault.” …”

I loved the backdrop of Glenn Beck in a replica of the Oval Office. There’s really nothing that screams kook at you more than that!

NY Times: Besieged Globalists Ponder What Went Wrong

September 26th, 2016

By Hunter Wallace

When I saw this headline, I swear I thought this article was from The Onion:

“Until recently, you didn’t hear people being referred to as “globalist” very often. But in a time of rising nationalism, those who see the upside of globalism have become a distinct — and often embattled — tribe.

Last week, the globalists had a big family reunion in New York. The gathering was focused on the United Nations General Assembly, but a growing array of side conferences and summits and dinners also attracted concerned internationalists of every stripe: humanitarians, leaders of nongovernmental organizations, donors, investors, app peddlers, celebrities.

But an absence haunted the week. Almost by definition, nationalists and localists are underrepresented at these global gatherings. Their paucity was especially notable this time, because the rising signs of nationalism — whether in the form of Donald J. Trump’s winning the Republican nomination, the British vote to leave the European Union, or the German backlash against Angela Merkel’s welcome to refugees — hovered like a specter over many of the discussions. …

Mr. Clinton spoke of the globalist vision of a “nonzero-sum” world in which everyone wins together and of how that idea was under attack by “zero-sum” tribal politics.”

What went wrong with neo-liberal globalism?

I don’t know … could it be the fact that it was oversold and had a negative impact on the White working class? Maybe it was the reaction of the average White guy in Middle England to Rotherham or the average White guy in the Rust Belt to routine terrorist attacks, shuttered factories and a heroin epidemic? What has Germany gained – aside from a fleeting warm fuzzy feeling among self-righteous, pampered elites – from absorbing a million raw Muslims from the battlefields of the Middle East?

When ‘Challenge’ Doesn’t Mean What You May Think…

September 26th, 2016
The campaign is run by the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Jamie Oliver’s Food Foundation and Brighton and Hove City Council.
Oliver said “It’s great to see so many people across the city up for getting involved with the campaign – taking a Sugar Smart challenge is a great way to start thinking about how to reduce the amount of sugar you consume.
An even better was would be to not read his cook books.

And judging by the number I see unopened and pristine at boot sales, lots are following this advice!
The first challenge, which started yesterday (Thursday September 15) ) is “make your breakfast low-sugar”. All people need to do is like a Facebook page and send in a photo of their healthier breakfast.

More Joy In Heaven, And All That…

September 26th, 2016
“I have an element of anxiety when I’m out and the other day as I was crossing in Barnes High Street a cyclist whizzed through a red light and in front of me. I thought it was happening again.
“I’m not sure what can be done but there doesn’t seem to be any significant penalties for cycling on the pavement or for riders who whizz through red lights. The feeling I got from police was that there was nothing they could do in my case.
“Had this man hit an elderly man or my young daughter it could have been a different story.
Says another anti-cycling driver who just wants to keep the roads all to themselves?

Well, no.

MEDIA LIED: Spree shooter is a Muslim Immigrant who hates women

September 25th, 2016

For 24 hours, the so-called “mainstream media” falsely told the public that the Burlington, Washington spree shooter was “Hispanic.” In reality he is an Muslim immigrant from Turkey. Now the media is making up completely fake “motives” and claiming the attack does not constitute terrorism, nor was it motivated by the shooters religion or culture.

People who know the shooter say otherwise. The shooter was mainly targeting female victims. He killed four women aged 16 to 95. He also killed one male victim who was in the way. The evidence we have so far suggests that this was anti-female hate crime and probably motivated, at least in part, by the killer’s religion and native Turkish culture.

This is the third Muslim immigrant to launch a terrorist style attack in the USA in the past week.
